The History of Bayshore A storied past, a colorful future

Bayshore Drive Formerly Kelly Rd.

ARTWORK CURTESY OF PAUL ARSENAULT

Bayshore Drive, was formerly known as Kelly Road, which was named after Naples Attorney H.B. Kelly.

It was a 2 lane, poorly maintained road that crossed Haldeman Creek. At the time there was just a small bridge.

Kelly Rd. was riddled with potholes and a few small scattered businesses, some shacks and empty lots. Landscaping, if you could call it that, was overgrown and a tangled mess of palms, brush and vines.  There were a few side streets, not visible from Kelly Rd., with a medley of homes.

Kelly Road was known as a BAD area with nicknames like Suicide Alley.

For this very reason, the County is revisiting a new name for the Bayshore Arts District...

H.B. Kelly, was a Naples Attorney served in the Florida House of Representatives, representing Collier County, from 1943 -1947
